The Need for a Break from The Avocado Tree Farm: Why It's Essential to Recharge

Life on The Avocado Tree Farm is vibrant and fulfilling, but it’s also a whirlwind of activities and responsibilities. John and I (Julia) juggle the daily operations of our certified organic avocado orchard and the tiny home accommodations we provide, all while managing our brands, John Tidy's Organics and The Avocado Tree Farm. From caring for our livestock — chickens, bees, sheep, cows and dogs — to maintaining the land and hosting visitors from near and far, our days are filled to the brim.

With so much going on, it's easy to overlook the importance of taking a break. But understanding when and why to step back can make all the difference in maintaining both our mental well-being and the quality of our work. Here’s why recognising the need for a break is crucial, for us all, whether you are familiar with farm life or lead busy lives in the city.

The Endless To-Do List

Every day on the farm brings a multitude of tasks. Whether it’s pruning avocado trees, picking and packing avocados, mulching and fertilising, growing seasonal veggies or cleaning our tiny homes for guests, the list never really ends. Add in the responsibilities of managing community involvement and keeping up with social media and marketing, and you can see why it’s easy to become overwhelmed.

Despite the joy we find in our work, the pressure can build up. It’s vital to remember that taking a step back is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential part of sustainability in our lives and businesses. A break allows us to clear our minds and return with renewed energy.

Reflection and Re-evaluation

Taking time away from the hustle and bustle provides a valuable opportunity for reflection. It’s a chance to evaluate what we do, why we do it and how we can improve moving forward. It’s about setting goals for the future, whether it’s enhancing our avocado production, refining our tiny home accommodation operations or simply improving our work-life balance.

When you’re caught up in daily tasks, it’s challenging to see the bigger picture. A change of scenery can help you gain fresh perspectives and spark new ideas.

Finding Your Happy Place

For us, our upcoming trip to New Zealand is our happy place—a beach getaway just an hour north of Whangarei. We’ll be staying in a tiny home by the ocean, free from responsibilities and the daily grind. The sound of the waves, the salt in the air and the beautiful sunrises are the perfect antidote to our busy lives.

Everyone has a “happy place,” whether it’s a beach, a mountain cabin, or simply a cosy corner of your home. Identifying where you feel most at peace is crucial. This place can be a sanctuary where your heart and soul can truly sing, allowing you to recharge and reconnect with yourself.

The Benefits of Rest

Taking a break can have numerous benefits, including:

  • Increased Productivity:  Stepping away from your responsibilities can lead to higher efficiency and creativity when you return.

  • Improved Mental Health:  A change of scenery and pace can alleviate stress and anxiety, promoting overall well-being.

  • Strengthened Relationships:  Time away can help you reconnect with loved ones - your spouse, friends, family or even yourself.
