Can Changing our Mindset from Buying Things to Buying Experiences Lead to a More Meaningful Christmas?

At The Avocado Tree Farm, we’re all about living with as small a footprint on the land and environment as possible. As the Christmas holidays draw near (how quickly did they sneak up?!), we’ve been reflecting on how we want to celebrate Christmas this year. Over the years, our celebrations have evolved, especially now that our kids are older and our priorities have shifted.

Christmas presents

Julia used to go all out with Christmas decorations—think moving ornaments, train sets and plenty of festive trinkets that would cover the tree and the living room. However, as time has passed and her children have grown up, that level of festivity no longer holds the same appeal. These days, she only pulls out the big decorations when her nieces and nephew visit. For her own children, who are in their 20s, the tree ornaments and gimmicky decorations just don't have the same magic they once did.

Our family’s approach to Christmas has also evolved in terms of gifting. Instead of buying piles of presents (some of which would eventually end up in a landfill), we’ve opted for a more minimalist approach. A tradition that’s developed over the last few years is a cheese fondue and condiments on Christmas Eve, sometimes opening a present or two, depending on what's on offer. One recent change has been our decision to focus on gifting one present to one other person in the family, with a set budget. It’s a practice in thoughtful gifting that helps reduce waste and consumption.

The Idea of a Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly Christmas

The first idea for a more sustainable Christmas came from Julia, who suggested we buy each other recycled or handmade gifts. However, this idea didn’t exactly get the enthusiasm hoped for. Julia herself ventured into a local op shop to search for unique, second-hand presents, but realised it was more challenging than expected. After some reflection, we came up with an idea that’s been met with more excitement: giving experiences rather than things.

Buying experiences instead of material gifts is not only a fantastic way to reduce waste, but it’s also a way to create lasting memories—something much more valuable than a 'thing' that may lose its novelty in a few months. The following is a short list of ideas for experiences that would make great gifts:

1. Cooking Class or Workshop

A cooking class can be an enjoyable and educational experience to share with family. There are many different classes on offer, such as sourdough workshops, fermenting foods, learning a specific type of cuisine - food is something we all enjoy and the skills learned in a cooking class be applied for the rest of your life.

2. Tickets to a Local Event or Concert

Support local artists or communities by purchasing tickets to an event or performance. Whether it’s a concert, a comedy show or a holiday light display, shared experiences like this foster connection and joy. The gift of an experience means you get to enjoy the moment together, rather than receiving something that might end up forgotten in a drawer.

3. Spa Day or Wellness Retreat

For a more relaxing gift, why not treat someone to a day of pampering at a local spa? A massage, facial or even a whole wellness retreat can be a wonderful way to unwind and recharge—particularly welcome after the busyness of the holiday season.

4. Outdoor Adventure or Day Trip

An outdoor adventure could be anything from a guided hike to a hot-air balloon ride. Or, if you’re looking for something more relaxed, a day trip to a nearby town, park or botanical garden can be a fun and lovely way to spend time together while supporting local businesses.

5. DIY Workshop or Craft Class

Learning a new craft or skill can be an great way to spend quality time while creating something meaningful. Whether it’s pottery, knitting, woodworking or candle-making, giving the gift of a workshop lets people try something new and potentially discover a hobby they’ll love long after Christmas.

6. Volunteer or Charity Activity

Sometimes, the best gift is giving back. For a unique and meaningful experience, gift your time by volunteering for a cause you care about. You can help out at a local food bank, plant trees in a community park or assist with a charity run. Not only is this a wonderful way to spend time together, but it’s also a great way to make a positive impact on the community and the environment.

7. Homegrown Gifts or Experiences

Sticking with the theme of sustainability, consider giving the gift of homegrown or homemade items. Whether it's a batch of homemade jam, a basket of fresh farm produce or even offering to help with some home repairs or gardening, these gifts have a personal touch and create lasting memories. For us, this is a great way to bring a little of The Avocado Tree Farm into our family’s holiday celebrations.

The Joy of Giving Experiences

One of the most rewarding aspects of giving experiences instead of physical gifts is that it focuses on time spent together rather than things. Our philosophy at The Avocado Tree Farm is to create a more sustainable and conscious way of living, so this approach helps reduce waste, supports local businesses and creates memories that last far longer than anything that can be wrapped up under the tree. Experiences can often be more meaningful than material gifts, which is why we’re going for gifts that enrich our lives in a deeper way.

Giving experiences rather than things is a wonderful way to connect, to minimise our environmental impact and to continue cultivating traditions that honour the land we live on. Christmas isn’t just about things—it’s about the beliefs we hold, memories we make and the love we share with those around us.

Wishing you all a joyful and sustainable Christmas season, filled with memorable experiences and shared moments of love and connection.
